Family Holiday Home: Powering Remote Comfort for Generations to Come

This off-grid system was designed to power a remote family holiday home and cottage with year-round reliability and low maintenance, despite limited winter sunshine and long-term access constraints. With construction set to span two years, the system was engineered to support both the building phase and long-term family use.

Location: Remote holiday home

Client Type: Extended family

System Type: New off-grid solar power system with backup generator

Key Objectives: Reliable power for two dwellings with remote monitoring and automatic generator backup

The Challenge

This extended family was building a holiday home and a separate cottage on a remote site with limited winter sunshine. Their priorities included quiet operation to preserve the tranquillity of the setting and a reliable power supply throughout the two-year construction period and beyond. The architectural design would restrict future access to both the solar array and power shed, so long-term reliability and low maintenance were essential. Power-hungry appliances such as electric ovens and hot water systems also needed to be factored in.

Our Solution

We designed and installed a managed AC-coupled off-grid system tailored for year-round reliability.

  • System Specs: 24 kW solar array, 120V 130 kWh maintenance-free lead-acid battery bank, 15 kW inverter, and a 20 kW auto-start diesel generator

  • Remote monitoring and generator automation ensure the system is hands-off and hassle-free

  • System sized for future-proofing both homes, with flexibility during the building phase

The Outcome

The family now enjoys a dependable power supply with minimal generator usage. The system has operated with 100% reliability since commissioning, giving the family peace of mind and allowing them to enjoy their home without worrying about power.

  • Savings: Low ongoing fuel and maintenance costs thanks to robust design

  • Reliability: Power available throughout construction and now for long-term occupancy

Key Takeaways

  • Even limited-sunshine sites can enjoy reliable, quiet, off-grid living with quality design

  • Long-term access constraints require careful up-front planning and premium equipment

  • A well-designed off-grid system supports both the build phase and future generations
